Staying safe
Most people are here for the right reasons. These simple steps will help you spot the few who aren't.
Never send money
Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or bank details to someone you've met online, however good the reason sounds. Common stories include a medical emergency, being stuck abroad, customs fees, or an investment opportunity. Nobody genuine will ask you for money.
Watch for warning signs
- They say they love you very quickly.
- They want to move to WhatsApp, Telegram or text straight away.
- They always have a reason they can't video call or meet.
- They say they work abroad, on an oil rig, in the military or for a charity overseas.
- Their story doesn't quite add up, or their photos look like a model's.
We'll show you a gentle reminder if a message mentions money or asks you to move to another app.
Keep personal details private
Don't share your home address, workplace, bank details or passwords. Take your time before sharing your phone number.
Meeting for the first time
- Video call first, if you can.
- Meet somewhere public, such as a café, during the day.
- Tell a friend or family member where you're going and who you're meeting.
- Make your own way there and back.
- Trust your instincts. It's fine to leave at any time.
If something doesn't feel right
Use the Report and Block buttons on any profile or conversation. The other person won't be told. Our safety team looks at every report. If you've lost money, contact your bank straight away and report it to the police.
